Ugandan health authorities declared an Ebola outbreak after an allegedly rare strain of the virus led to a 24-year-old patient’s death.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) office in Africa released a statement confirming the 24-year-old died while suffering from Ebola symptoms in Uganda’s Mubende district.

Currently, Ugandan health officials are looking into the cause of six other deaths which could be Ebola-related.

Additionally, the African WHO office announced they were coordinating with Ugandan health authorities to investigate eight potential cases of Ebola.

“There are currently eight suspected cases who are receiving care in a health facility,” WHO Africa explained.

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Africa’s regional director said a similar outbreak has not occurred in the country in over 10 years.

“This is the first time in more than a decade that Uganda is recording the Ebola Sudan strain. We are working closely with the national health authorities to investigate the source of this outbreak,” Dr. Moeti stated.

The last time ebolavirus broke out and Uganda declared an outbreak was in 2012.

Social media users raised skepticism about the virus outbreak.

Maybe they saw that we survived COVID and now they want to bring back Ebola,” one Twitter user posted.

Another Twitter user suspected this virus outbreak is a manufactured attempt for Uganda to profit. “We’re no longer interested in such games…. You want to get money to satisfy your stomachs from abroad…”
