It didn’t take long for the Trump re-election campaign to read the tea leaves after Super Tuesday.
Former vice president Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders were the big winners, but the Trump campaign said the whole thing is still a hot mess.
“The results only increase the likelihood that no candidate will have enough delegates for a first ballot victory at their convention, which only means more chaos! The media is hyperventilating about Joe Biden but everyone should remember that he is just as terrible a candidate right now as he was a few days ago,” wrote Brad Parscale, Trump 2020 campaign manager. “At the same time, establishment Democrats have ganged up to try to deny Bernie Sanders the nomination, which is causing even more mayhem.
“Even if Bernie is not on November’s ballot, his big government socialist ideas will be because they have become mainstream in today’s Democrat Party. President Trump will wipe the floor with whatever Democrat is unlucky enough to be the nominee.”
In the big night, Biden won nine states, including Texas. Sanders won the other five states, including the biggest prize of the night, California.
Michael Bloomberg, who dropped more than $550 million of his $64 billion fortune, had a terrible night. He won only American Samoa — for a whopping haul of five delegates.
In the U.S. territory covering seven South Pacific islands and atolls, Bloomberg won 49.9% of the vote — or 175 votes. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), who was born there, came in second at 29.3%, or 103 votes, grabbing her only delegate of the night.
For comparison, Biden won 467 delegates and Sanders 392. Even Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) won more at 51 (although she did finish third in her home state).
President Trump, who detests Bloomberg, had some fun with Bloomberg’s dismal delegate haul — and said he spent well more than the $550 million most accounts say he spent on his campaign.
“The biggest loser tonight, by far, is Mini Mike Bloomberg. His ‘political’ consultants took him for a ride. $700 million washed down the drain, and he got nothing for it but the nickname Mini Mike, and the complete destruction of his reputation. Way to go Mike!” the president wrote on Twitter.
Then he went on a tear after Bloomberg dropped out on Wednesday.
“Mini Mike Bloomberg just ‘quit’ the race for President. I could have told him long ago that he didn’t have what it takes, and he would have saved himself a billion dollars, the real cost. Now he will pour money into Sleepy Joe’s campaign, hoping to save face. It won’t work,” he tweeted.
“Mini Mike Bloomberg will now FIRE Tim O’Brien, and all of the fools and truly dumb people who got him into this MESS. This has been the worst, and most embarrassing, experience of his life…and now on to Sleepy Joe!”
In one last post, Trump wrote: “Mini Mike, “Three months ago I entered the race for President to defeat Donald Trump, (and I failed miserably!).”
In all, Bloomberg won just 45 delegates, according to Real Clear Politics.
That means he spent more than $12.2 million per delegate.
And in California, Bloomberg forked out $54 million in advertising. He won just eight delegates. The price tag: $6.75 million per delegate.
