A mum from Leeds claimed her son was sent home from school for selling squirts of hand sanitiser to his fellow pupils and profiting off the coronavirus outbreak.

Jenny Tompkins posted a photo of her son on Facebook, saying he had just got in from school “at 10:53am,” despite the schools not finishing until 3. “The little turd has just been expelled from school for the day after been [sic] caught charging students 50p a squirt for hand sanitiser to protect themselfs [sic] from the bloody coronavirus,” Tompkins wrote, seemingly infuriated.

When the school called to discuss his temporary exclusion, she had tried to be serious, despite him returning home “with a big grin on his face.” Tompkins said it was hard to discipline his behaviour, because his dad called him from work and called him a “legend.” In an edit, she went on to say that her son had apparently made a total of £9, and bought a multipack of doritos with his earnings, saving the rest to buy a kebab later.

Commenters mostly praised Tompkins’s son for his ingenuity and supposed business acumen. One called him “a very enterprising lad,” another suggested he would get an A in economics if he took it up in later life, and another noted that they can’t “fault his logic!”

In a statement, Dixons Unity Academy in Leeds denied that the pupil in question had been sent home for selling hand sanitiser. “No pupil has ever been excluded for selling hand sanitiser,” the statement said. “The student in question was excluded for a separate and unrelated incident in line with academy behaviour policy.”
