South Korea recently confirmed 111 cases of coronavirus reinfection as they combat the spread of the deadly Covid-19.

The reinfections were confirmed at Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, which were the epicenters of the outbreak of the disease in South Korea.

Korea Times reported, that Jung Eun-kyeong, director of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), announced they would be investigating the potential causes for reinfection of the disease which has claimed more than 100,000 lives worldwide.

Jung said: “For now it is uncertain what led to reinfection ― revived virus that survived treatment or fresh exposure to the virus after recovery.”

Health officials signaled it was far likelier for Covid-19 patients to have the virus be reactivated rather than be reinfected. However, the theory is being explored as a possibility.

The virus can remain dormant in certain cells and be reactivated, attacking the lungs despite being given the all-clear.

Other countries have also reported cases where patients who appeared to have recovered, testing negative for the disease, succumbing again to the coronavirus, Kyodo News reported.

According to Korea Times: “A COVID-19 patient is deemed fully recovered after showing negative results for two tests in a row within a 24-hour interval. The country’s COVID-19 infections reported 32 additional virus cases, bringing total infections to 10,512.”

The KCDC signaled they would be sharing the findings with the World Health Organization–whose handling of the pandemic has been roundly criticized–to draw nearer to finding a potential cure.

China has also reported new cases over the weekend after huge questions were asked over their lack of transparency, silencing of dissidents, and their claims of having the pandemic under control.

A recent narrative was spun to shirk blame for the outbreak to America as it was claimed that the new coronavirus cases in China originated abroad.
