The prestigious Harvard University’s magazine has received flak in recent years for two articles which have been controversial–to say the least.
Most recently was a piece titled, “The Risks of Homeschooling,” that addresses the challenges faced by children who are supposedly isolated from collective schooling and a democratic society when their parents take it upon themselves to educate them.
But Elizabeth Bartholet, a law professor and faculty director of the Law School’s Child Advocacy Program, recommends a “presumptive ban” on homeschooling, arguing that the practice violates a child’s right to a “meaningful education.”
Bartholet, in the excerpt, critiques the relatively unregulated practice of homeschooling and suggests that parents are not under any obligation to provide their children with best education.
She goes onto propose so-called “mandated reporters” to survey the children, their intellectual formation, quality of education, and to ensure they are not victims of abuse. The law professor goes onto cite a case of a homeschooled Idaho girl who was abused by her older brother and was given a lackluster education with narrow career opportunities.
Bartholet notes that a huge proportion of homeschooling families are Christian, hovering a question mark over the parent’s influence.
Forbes, however, interpreted the article as a call for the abolition of the family–something which has gained infamy as various left-wing pundits and even publications such as The Nation have called for its dissolution.
Harvard Magazine also ran a piece arguing for the abolition of the “white race” in a controversial work written by the deceased Noel Ignatiev in 2002.
In the article on Ignatiev’s work, they write, “The goal of abolishing the white race on its face is so desirable that some may find it hard to believe that it could incur any opposition other than committed white supremacists.”
Responding to a reader, the editors made it clear that, “make no mistake about it: we intend to keep bashing the dead white males, and the live ones, and the female ones too, until the social construct know as the white race is destroyed–not ‘deconstructed’ but destroyed.”
Institutions of higher learning are under immense criticism from the wider public for adopting radical–and even quasi-genocidal–ideologies, while saddling students with hefty debt loads in the process.
