The upcoming reboot of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is set to replace the largely male pirate crew of the popular original movies with a new, all-female cast.
Vulture reports the all-female reboot will feature a “wholly original story with new characters under the Pirates moniker”.
The lead character will be played by popular Hollywood actress Margot Robbie, who recently starred in a similar and deeply unsuccessful all-female Batman spin-off titled Birds of Prey. Birds of Prey bombed at the box office, as the largely male fanbase of the DC comics universe felt disinclined to turn out to see an all-female movie with a feminist message.

Unsurprisingly, the writer of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is set to be Christina Hodson, who previously wrote the screenplay for Birds of Prey. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the earlier movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is set to remain as producer for the new film.

Robbie and Hodson have also announced a new joint project titled the ‘Lucky Exports Pitch Program’, which is described as aiming to get “more female-identifying writers” on board writing action movies for major film studios.
Many action movies produced by female social justice warriors in recent years have been highly unsuccessful. In 2019 alone, Captain Marvel, Terminator: Dark Fate, and Charlie’s Angels – all from major action movie franchises – were released with female leads and blatant underlying feminist messaging. All three movies received abysmal box office ratings. All-female Fast and Furious, The Matrix, and Avengers movies, as well as a “female-centric” Star Wars TV show, are also set to be in the works.
Pirates of the Caribbean has been one of the most lucrative movie franchises in history, earning Disney $4.5 billion between the five films released. It remains to be seen whether this new direction for the franchise will be able to generate the same level of revenue as the previous movies.
