The FBI has opened over 300 investigations on Antifa domestic terrorism

(Natural NewsArsenio Toledo) According to Erin Nealy Cox, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, the Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) has opened more than 300 investigations on domestic terrorism as a result of the nationwide wave of engineered rioting that erupted after the death of George Floyd in late May.

Cox made this announcement during her testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution’s hearing on preventing violence in protests. Cox was appointed by Attorney General William Barr to lead a newly created task force that would investigate anti-government extremist groups and individuals that may have violent tendencies. The subcommittee is led by chairman Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and the hearing Cox was speaking in was titled “The Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble: Protecting Speech by Stopping Anarchist Violence.”

Cox’ task force is co-headed by Craig Carpenito, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. It is composed of both prosecutors as well as officers from the FBI. Not only has Barr given the task force the responsibility of investigating extremist groups, but it will also be learning everything it can about the individuals within the movements, as well as all of their associated networks.

“[The task force] has, since May 28, opened over 300 domestic terrorist investigations,” said Cox during her testimony. “That does not include any potential civil rights investigations or violent crime associated with the riots.”

“Any group, regardless of their name, if they’re violent and anti-government, we will be looking at them,” Cox continued.

The U.S. attorney elaborated that if any extremist groups engaged in “gang or drug activity,” then those criminal actions would not fall under the responsibilities of the new task force, as they will be focusing all of their resources on investigating violent anti-government activities.

Democrats want new task force to be shuttered

The Democratic senators in the subcommittee immediately raised concerns when they were told of Cox’s new task force. Many of their supposed hangups revolve around their allegations that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is not taking the threat coming from white supremacist and other far-right groups seriously. They claim this despite the fact that, last year, Director of the FBI Christopher Wray, a Republican, stated that a large percentage of the bureau’s ongoing domestic terrorism investigations were linked to white supremacy.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, one of the Democrats in the subcommittee, asked Cox why the DOJ “has stopped tracking white supremacist incidents as a separate category of domestic terrorism.” Cox refused to answer, and Ted Cruz diverted the subcommittee’s attention to the original topic of the hearing.

During the testimony of Ken Cuccinelli, the acting deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security(DHS), he told the senators in the subcommittee that around 140 federal law enforcement personnel guarding a federal courthouse in Portland have sustained over 277 injuries due to the extremely violent and sustained nightly battles they have had to wage against the Antifa and Black Lives Matter rioters in the city.

At one point during the hearing, Cuccinelli picked up a frozen water bottle and banged it on the desk. He said that these have been thrown at officers, along with other projectiles such as pipes, Molotov cocktails and fireworks.

The other Democrats on the subcommittee attempted to weigh in by diverting the hearing’s attention to other matters, such as when Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island asked Cuccinelli about an incident involving a U.S. Navy veteran allegedly getting beaten. The acting secretary merely responded by saying that the incident is being investigated by the DHS’ inspector general, and Cox responded by saying that the U.S. Marshals Service(USMS) was also conducting an investigation on the matter.

Cruz kept the hearing focused by stating that denouncing the Left-wing extremism of Antifa and other groups like it “shouldn’t be a political game.”

“Don’t kill people. Don’t set police cars on fire,” he further said, stating something that he believes should be obvious to the Democrats in the subcommittee.

The Democrats in the hearing were of one mind in their belief that Cruz and other Republicans have been overstating Antifa’s involvement in the demonstrations, as well as the threat the radical group poses to property and lives.

“All of this talk about leftist anarchy is just a big deflection from the nationwide call for justice,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, one of Oregon’s two Democratic senators. Wyden lives in Portland. (Related: Black journalist stabbed in the back at Portland protest was targeted for being conservative.)
