British comedian Ricky Gervais is no stranger to calling out woke progressive culture. Most recently, the former ‘The Office’ star took aim at a current trend of ruining the lives of many whose opinions fail to fall in line with prevailing sensitivities.
In an interview with UK publication Metro, Gervais, 59, blasted so-called “cancel culture” defining the mob-based practice as: “…when people are trying to get someone fired because they don’t like their opinion about something that’s nothing to do with their job, that’s what I call cancel culture and that’s not cool.”
Gervais, currently working on his Netflix series ‘After Life’, added: “You turning off your own TV isn’t censorship. You trying to get other people to turn off their TV, because you don’t like something they’re watching, that’s different.”
“Everyone’s allowed to call you an a******e, everyone’s allowed to stop watching your stuff, everyone’s allowed to burn your DVDs, but you shouldn’t have to go to court for saying a joke that someone didn’t like. And that’s what we get dangerously close to,” he said. “If you don’t agree to someone’s right to say something you don’t agree with, you don’t agree with freedom of speech.”
The world-renowned comedian went on to make a comparison between his vegetarianism and love of dogs to Hitler’s same preferences to expose the nature of “mob outrage” cancel culture.
Earlier this week, National File reported on a tweet where Gervais urged Hollywood to “stop f***ing children” when his comedy was not nominated for an Emmy.
“#AfterLife didn’t get nominated for an Emmy this year,” he tweeted. “But this did. ‘Outstanding Live Variety Special: The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards’ That’s some conciliation, I guess. So, Thanks, Hollywood. Oh, and stop f**king kids. Cheers.”
