How To Keep Your Spirit Strong During These Hard Times

“Now I understand everyone’s shit’s emotional right now. But I’ve got a 3-point plan that’s going to fix EVERYTHING. Number 1: We’ve got this guy Trump. Number 2: He’s got a higher IQ than any man alive. Number 3: He’s going to fix EVERYTHING.” President Camacho

Well, where to begin?

2020 has been a biblical year; a year of testing.

They say hard times reveal his or hers’ true nature . . . apparently this year has revealed many.

“There has been a constant war, a war with fear. Those who have the courage to conquer it are made free and those who are conquered by it are made to suffer until they have the courage to defeat it.” Alexander The Great

Fear. We all experience it. From the fear of the unknown to the fear of the unkind, we become fixated, suffocated, and exhausted by it.

How to keep your spirit strong during these hard times tip #1:

As Buddha once said, “The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There’s only one moment for you to live, and that is the present moment.”

Observe the clouds, how white they are, how pristine they are . . . observe the ice blue sky, how clear it can be, how revealing it should be, look at the green grass, how vibrant it is, how full of life it is, breathe deeply, breathe fully, breathe completely, slowly, carefully, just to feel the oxygen rejuvenate the soul, the spirit, the body . . . smell the air wherever you be, the salt inside the wind, the pine inside the gusts, the cut grass inside the soothing licks of air . . . often it is the small gifts of life that soothes big fears of this world.

“To hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.”  Miyamoto Musashi

To fall back into childish, toddler behavior is far too easy; adults must be strong—logical, accountable, and responsible.

Find yourself drinking too much during these times? Ask yourself why am I doing this and how does this affect me and my loved ones? Find yourself eating too much? Ask yourself how does this solve the grieving, the pain, and the strain of all Americans who desperately need you to keep your strength and honor if we are to make it out of this alive.

How to keep your spirit strong during these hard times tip #2:

“Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in thought, for the human spirit is colored by such impressions.” Marcus Aurelius

Break out your Bible and read Proverbs, look on Amazon for books concerning Stoicism, lay down on the carpet and be with your loving dog, cat, or pet; do whatever it takes to get your brain off of the ‘programmed negative content” continuously cycled through new outlets, social media, and commercials. You will feel much better as you continue to digest real wisdom and advice.

How to keep your spirit strong during these hard times tip #3:

“Other people’s views and troubles can be contagious. Don’t sabotage yourself by unwittingly adopting negative, unproductive attitudes through your associations with others.” Epictetus

(Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher. What’s incredible is that he was born a slave. He lived in Rome until he was banished,  he then went to Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.)

We must protect ourselves against other’s negative thinking. Find a place where you can be alone and listen to the music or read quotes that will make you happy. Enjoy a book or cook the meal that you love. Try to limit your interaction with those who are constantly negative. This includes the news!

How to keep your spirit strong during these hard times tip #4:

“Attach yourself to what is spiritually superior, regardless of what other people think or do. Hold to your true aspirations no matter what is going on around you.” Epictetus

The goals, dreams, values, and principles you display override the chaos and strife around you. Never lose hope. Keep your values true. Keep your principles aligned. Never give up on your goals. Never give up on your dreams.

God bless America and God bless us all.
