Amy Barrett Infected With COVID-19 Months Ago, Tested Negative Friday

Update (1400ET): The Washington Post has broken one of the most surprising twists of what has been a very busy day in terms of news flow. According to several sources, Judge Amy Coney Barrett has already had COVID-19, and has tested negative many times, virtually assuring that she wasn’t infected, and likely didn’t infect the president, or the president of her alma mater (as well as where she teaches), per the Washington Post.

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was diagnosed with the coronavirus earlier this year but has since recovered, three officials familiar with her diagnosis told The Washington Post.

Two of the officials said she tested positive for the virus in the summer. All of the people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose her medical condition.

As the Supreme Court nominee, Barrett is now tested daily and most recently had a negative diagnosis for covid-19 on Friday morning, according to deputy White House press secretary Judd Deere.

Deere said she was last with President Donald Trump, who has tested positive for the virus, on Saturday, at her Rose Garden ceremony announcing her nomination to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barrett has been on the Hill at least three times this week, meeting with roughly 30 senators in one-on-one meetings to discuss her nomination.

“She is following CDC guidance and best practices, including social distancing, wearing face coverings, and frequently washes hands,” Deere said.

Unfortunately, this ads little insight into how President Trump was infected.

Update (1250ET): Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins, who traveled to the White House on Saturday to attend the press briefing announcing Judge Barrett as Trump’s SCOTUS nominee, has tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19, according to media reports citing a memo that was sent out to ND students Friday.

Though Barrett has tested positive, Jenkins status is bound to raise questions about when Trump might have contracted the virus. The University president was criticized for not wearing a mask during Saturday’s event.

Jenkins courted national attention when he became one of the first university presidents to announce that it was bringing kids back to campus.

Meanwhile, Rudy Giuliani is in the process of getting tested, and we’re still waiting on Biden’s test results.

Update (0950ET): Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett has tested negative for the virus. She was tested after spending the bulk of Saturday at the White House, and standing next to Trump on the podium.

Update (0930ET): As we await the results of Pelosi’s and Biden’s tests, the White House has just revealed that GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has tested positive.

McDaniel tweeted her well wishes to Trump and Melania just 30 mins ago.

On the other hand, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump both tested negative.

Barron Trump, the president’s youngest child, has also tested negative.

Still no word on AG Barr.

Update (0850ET): Eamon Javers of CNBC says that his WH sources are telling him that Mnuchin won’t be quarantining due to his negative COVID-19 test and limited contact with Trump in recent days.

Trump has one “event” on his calendar for Friday, Javers reminds us. The world will be watching to see if he can get through it.

AG Barr hasn’t been in the room with Trump since Saturday during ACB’s nomination, and is reportedly asymptomatic. Regardless, he will be tested anyway.

Update (0825ET): Markets will surely be relieved to learn that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has also tested negative for the virus.

Mnuchin spokeswoman Monica Crowley affirmed that Mnuchin had tested negative on Friday, and that he would continue to be tested daily in keeping with existing protocols.

The Treasury Secretary also wished President Trump a speedy recovery.

In what will undoubtedly be taken as good news by the market, Vice President Mike Pence’s office just confirmed that both the VP and the second lady, Karen Pence have tested negative for COVID-19.

Pence’s last known interaction with Trump apparently occurred on Tuesday before the debate, when the two met in the Oval Office.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also tested negative earlier, the State Department said.

Of course, there have been instances where people who have contracted the virus don’t test positive for several days, and both will likely continue to be tested in the coming days, since the incubation period is up to 14 days, with a median of about 4 to 5 days.

The White House just added that it will keep staffers for the president and the vice president separate in the coming days.

Hope Hicks, the senior Trump advisor who initially tested positive Thursday, setting off the latest West Wing outbreak scare, has reportedly been in contact with more than 20 other staffers.

As we noted earlier, Biden is expected to be tested Friday morning. We expect those results will be in soon.

With Pence “safe” – for now, at least – the MSM is turning its attention to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who met with Trump early Wednesday before meeting with Democratic leaders, including Nancy Pelosi, on Capitol Hill later in the day.

Which means there’s a chance that both the Democratic and Republican leadership might be sickened before the election.
