Cal Cunningham, the Democrat Senate candidate for North Carolina, has backed out of a Town Hall after National File reported on a potential second mistress.

National File’s Patrick Howley broke the story last Thursday, revealing exclusive text messages that Cunningham sent to Arlene Guzman Todd, a public relations strategist from California, who currently lobbies for the medical marijuana industry. As National File reported:

Cunningham refers to Guzman Todd in the text messages below as “historically sexy,” imagines kissing her, says he has been dreaming “of our time together,” and the two plan for Cunningham to make up an excuse for his family and ditch a staffer so the two can meet and, in Guzman Todd’s words, “kiss a lot.” Guzman Todd says she wants “a night with you” and Cunningham agrees that he wants that too. Guzman Todd says that “the only thing I want on my to do list is you” and Cunningham says that “Sounds so hot and so fun!”

Today National File published a report that Cunningham is engaged in a second affair with a woman who did not know of Guzman Todd’s existence. Following these new reports, Cunningham dropped out of a Senate town hall scheduled on Monday afternoon, seemingly wanting to get away from the harsh media spotlight.

“A U.S. Senate town hall scheduled for Monday afternoon is off. Unfortunately [Cal Cunningham] has backed out. Organizers will try to reschedule,” wrote Jeff Tiberii a Political Reporter for WUNC.

“I’m disappointed for the organizers,” Tiberii added, “also that we will not hear from Cunningham about sexually suggestive texts he sent to a woman (not his wife, nor mother of his children.”

Cunningham admitted to the steamy texts published by National File on Friday night, telling The News & Observer in a statement that they were legitimate. “I have hurt my family, disappointed my friends, and am deeply sorry,” Cunningham said:

The first step in repairing those relationships is taking complete responsibility, which I do. I ask that my family’s privacy be respected in this personal matter. I remain grateful and humbled by the ongoing support that North Carolinians have extended in this campaign, and in the remaining weeks before this election I will continue to work to earn the opportunity to fight for the people of our state.”

Erin Brinkman, a North Carolina attorney, claimed that a close friend of hers had been having an affair with Cunningham since 2012, and was “devastated” to find about Guzman Todd from National File’s reporting.

Google search trends for Cunningham at the time of writing all relate to his affair.
