Fire Prevention Week Reminder: Utility “Smart” Meters Can and Do Catch Fire and Explode. Millions Recalled and Replaced Already

By B.N. Frank

Tens of millions of utility “Smart” Meters – electric, gas, and water – have been installed in the U.S. and worldwide. Customers’ rates have been increased to install them (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and they DO NOT save meaningful amounts of energy.

They also catch fire and explode. There are multiple websites that include information about this (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). In 2012, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) even recognized this incendiary trend. In 2015, a downed power line in Stockton, CA caused hundreds of electric utility “Smart” Meters to simultaneously explode. Obviously, “Smart” Meter fires and explosions aren’t exclusive to California (see 1, 2, 3).

However, California homeowners and their insurance agents have sued utility companies because of “Smart” Meter fires.

At least one very detailed report has been written about electrical and fire hazards associated with “Smart” meters and other digital utility meters.

Other undesirable problems have also been identified with “Smart” Meters (see 1, 2, 3). If you’re concerned about any of the risks associated with these dangerous and unnecessary devices, you may want to contact your utility company and ask to opt-out ASAP.
