The two incumbent US Senators from Georgia – both embroiled in run-off elections due to take place on January 5, have called for the resignation of the state’s Republican Secretary of State citing numerous “failures” in the November 3, 2020 General Election in Georgia.

Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue of Georgia called on Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to step down in the aftermath of an election complicated by allegations of fraud and, in one case, a burst pipe that damaged no ballots.

“There have been too many failures in Georgia elections this year and the most recent election has shined a national light on the problems,” Loeffler and Perdue said in a joint statement. “The Secretary of State has failed to deliver honest and transparent elections. He has failed the people of Georgia, and he should step down immediately.”

Recently, Raffensperger misreported the number of uncounted ballots in the state by 35,000, an amount that would have dramatically surpassed the margin of victory in the race between President Trump and challenger Joe Biden.

During Georgia’s Primary Election, Raffensperger admitted that at least 1,000 Georgians voted twice. In this instance, voters were able to vote absentee and then again in person on Election Day without detection. Raffensperger promised tough consequences for those caught violating federal law, although it is uncertain if anyone was ever pursued for their voter fraud.

Raffensperger responded to the calls for his resignation by the Senators through a statement saying he would not resign. He also defended his office’s handling of the election saying the election was a “resounding success” from an administration perspective.
