Trump Campaign Files Lawsuit in Wisconsin Challenging Hundreds of Thousands of Illegal Ballots

The Trump campaign has filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin that challenges the validity of hundreds of thousands of illegally cast ballots.

Wisconsin was carried by President Trump in the 2016 presidential election, flipping the state along with a number of others in the rust belt, as he picked up support from working class voters who rejected the Democrats. However, the current vote total after a recount would suggest that Vice President Biden won the state by almost 20,700 votes. The Trump campaign alleges that severe voter fraud has occurred, and has submitted a lawsuit.

The lawsuit was submitted by the Trump campaign directly to Wisconsin’s Supreme Court in order to avoid losing time going through the lower courts. It demands that Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, withdraw the certification of the state’s Electoral College votes for Biden that occurred on Monday. The Supreme Court gave Evers until 8:30PM on Tuesday to respond.

It argues that around 221,000 ballots cast be thrown out, due to an “abuse of absentee voting,” with Wisconsin Election Commission officials and the city clerks of Milwaukee and Madison having “willfully disregarded the current statute and made conscious efforts to circumvent Wisconsin election law.”

“As we have said from the very beginning of this process, we want all legal votes and only legal votes to be counted,” argued Rudy Giuliani, the head of the Trump campaign’s legal team. “Americans must be able to trust in our election results, and we not stop until we can ensure voters once again have faith in our electoral process.”

In a press release, the Trump campaign gives various examples of this irregular voting practices, such as: that absentee ballots were sent out without express permission; that clerks illegally filed out missing voter data; that 20,000 voters illegitimately claimed a certain form of absentee ballot that did not require proper identification; that the city of Madison created 200 unlawful polling locations.

Jim Troupis, counsel to the Trump campaign, said in a statement that the people of Wisconsin “deserve election processes with uniform enforcement of the law, plain and simple”:

During the recount in Dane and Milwaukee counties, we know with absolute certainty illegal ballots have unduly influenced the state’s election results. Wisconsin cannot allow the over three million legal ballots to be eroded by even a single illegal ballot. We will continue fighting on behalf of the American people to defend their right to a free and fair election by helping to restore integrity and transparency in our elections.
