There have been numerous news reports about wireless baby monitors being compromised by hackers as well as power outages. Harmful radiation being emitted by these devices is also a serious issue.
From Babygaga:
Radiation From Baby Monitors: The Risks & Lower Emission Options
Many parents don’t even think twice about RF Radiation emitted by their baby monitors, but it is a real issue. Most of today’s baby monitors use DECT or FHSS technology, meaning that they give off the exact same radiation as cell phones, WiFi routers, and microwave ovens. There have been studies linking this type of emission to things like cancer, crib death, DNA damage, and even male infertility.
The worry isn’t exaggerated as The International Agency for Research on Cancer announced in 2011 that all radio frequencies are possible causes of cancer. Since different models of these monitors emit different ranges of radio frequencies. It makes some safer than others in terms of potential health hazards for a baby. For moms and dads who might be unfamiliar with this issue, it’s important to know the risks involved to make a proper choice for your home.
What Are The Risks To Children?
Babies have bodies that differ from our own. Their skulls are notoriously known for being thinner and their internal systems are constantly developing at a rapid rate. This makes them more vulnerable to microwave exposures and means that even small exposures to electromagnetic frequencies can have significant long-term impact.
Experts recommend placing any wireless baby monitor at least 6 feet from your child’s sleeping area. Research done on digital cordless monitors revealed that these devices placed less than 3.2 feet from a baby’s crib can actually emit nearly the same level of radiation as a cell phone tower 500 feet away.
With everything from cell phones to common “smart” appliances around the home emitting EMFs, it is starting to become more and more prevalent in our daily lives to face exposure to these electromagnetic radiations. The concern is real and while there may be chance that all will be “fine”, there is always a chance that it won’t.
How Can I Reduce The Risk Involved With My Baby Monitor?
For many years, American Academy of Pediatrics and other health experts (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) have warned that children are especially vulnerable to wireless radiation exposure. Other sources include activity trackers and other wearables (see 1, 2), Bluetooth, cell phones, cell towers, “Smart” home appliances and devices (see 1, 2, 3), utility “Smart” meters (electric, gas, and water), and WiFi routers.
