VIDEO: South African Armored Vehicle Carrying Cash Survives Massive Assault, Gunshots And Ramming

Dramatic footage has emerged showing a driver and passenger of a cash-in-transit vehicle in South Africa survive an attempted armed heist.

The footage of the incident, which occurred last week, shows the internal dash cam of the cash-in-transit vehicle, making its way down a highway near Pretoria, one of South Africa’s three capital cities. The driver and passenger were then subject to a vehicle attack from armed thugs, who start shooting at the vehicle from their own as they chase them down the road.

In the footage, the yet unnamed driver can be seen ramming one of the vehicles before escaping down the road. Despite the flurry of gunfire that has just occurred, he remains calm and collected while instructing his passenger to equip himself with a rifle, rather than the handgun he has on him. After turning around, travelling against incoming traffic for a short while, the two men are once again subjected to gunfire, with rounds once again smashing into their bulletproof windows.

The driver eventually stopped the vehicle in a car park, where he exited it with the rifle taken from his passenger, and attempted to face the robbers himself. Photos taken show the vehicle with its front bumper missing, and the bulletproof windows smashed with bullet holes. Early reports have suggested that the driver was a retired member of the police force, suggesting his cool response was down to decades of experience and training.

Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, a National Police spokesman, said that a group of men had attempted to rob the vehicle on the N4 in Pretoria on the 22nd of April. “The suspects fired several shots at the CIT vehicle in an attempt to stop it during a high-speed chase,” Naidoo said. “The driver of the CIT vehicle managed to evade the robbers for a while, but later stopped in wait for the robbers.” With the suspects fleeing without taking any cash, no arrests have so far been made, Naidoo added.

Armed heists against cash-in-transit vehicles are a very common occurrence in South Africa, with another robbery having taken place in Cape Town this Wednesday. A police officer and security guard were wounded during the incident at a gas station, where the criminals fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, although they were eventually caught by police.
