As previously reported, Rebecca Firlit, a Chicago mother, said that a Cook County judge took away her parental rights for not getting the COVID vaccine – the judge then reversed the order after his decision garnered media attention.
The 39-year-old mother said that the Illinois judge asked her whether or not she had gotten the COVID vaccine during an August 10 hearing.
She responded by saying that she had not due to prior bad reactions with vaccines.
Cook County Judge James Shapiro then stripped the mother of all her parenting time with her son.
According to Annete Fernholz, the attorney for Rebecca Firlit, the father did not even bring this issue before the court.
Now this…
Judge Shapiro recused himself from the case on Tuesday after public backlash.
“Although I believe I can be fair and impartial, the Canons of Judicial Ethics speak to the perception of fairness and impartiality as well as fairness and impartiality itself,” Cook County Judge James Shapiro said in a statement, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Public perception may be that I can’t be fair and impartial. Therefore, I am going to recuse myself from further proceedings in this case,” he continued.
The Cook County judge who barred a mother from seeing her son because she wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19 and then reversed his decision weeks later recused himself from her case Tuesday. https://t.co/MgRsLvg29X
