A Las Vegas woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the death of an elderly man she shoved out the door of a bus in 2019. Serge Fournier, 74, later died from injuries he sustained after being shoved onto a sidewalk by then-26-year-old Cadesha Bishop. Fournier had asked Bishop to “be nice” after she was involved in an altercation with other passengers.
Last month, Bishop pleaded guilty to abuse of an older vulnerable person resulting in substantial bodily harm or death. She had originally been charged with murder but later accepted a plea agreement. “I’m sorry for my behavior,” Bishop told the judge Friday before complaining about her portrayal in the media. “I’m sorry for the way that I was portrayed in my lowest and weakest moment of my life,” she said. “The way that I’ve been portrayed, it’s just not fair for somebody who’s never been in trouble before.”
Authorities reviewed CCTV footage of the killing, which took place on March 21, 2019, after Bishop was involved in an altercation with another elderly passenger. Bishop’s son, who was with her on the day of the incident, sat down next to an elderly woman who was using a walker. “If she hits me in the face with that walker again I’m gonna hit her a** back in the face,” Bishop can be heard saying to her son. “She don’t know it, because I’m gonna let your a** know now…. Ain’t nobody sit down because she overweight,” Bishop’s tirade continued.
Fournier then confronted the woman and told her to “be nice” as he exited the bus. After exchanging words, Bishop shoved the elderly man off the bus as his back was turned, causing Fournier to fall face first onto the concrete. Bishop then stepped over the mortally wounded Fournier without making an attempt to help him.
Fournier died from his injuries a month later.
Bishop was arrested not long after the attack. She initially posted $100,000 bail, but was reincarcerated before long after being accused of stealing a rental car.
On Friday, she was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison. Bishop will be eligible for parole after eight years.
