The Bulk of Liz Cheney’s Donations Have Come from Outside Wyoming

U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) celebrated a sizable fundraising haul after raking in more than $2.9 million in the first quarter of 2022. Cheney, who has been censured by both the RNC and the Wyoming GOP, is currently locked in a tightly contested primary with Harriet Hageman, who previously described the embattled Cheney as her “best friend.”  According to a document from Open Secrets, which detailed the congresswoman’s fourth quarter fundraising, the bulk of Liz Cheney’s donations have come from outside her home state.

Cheney has received sizable donations from across the country, with Texas donors providing the most. Texas donors ultimately contributed $556,430 to Cheney’s campaign in the fourth quarter of 2021. California is the second highest, with the state’s donors contributing $541,880. Furthermore, Cheney raised $466,100 in donations from Virginia, $450,370 from Florida donors, $408,290 from New Yorkers and $215,600 from Connecticut donors.

According to Open Secrets, Liz Cheney raised just $276,290 in donations from Wyoming residents last election cycle. In 2021, Cheney raised $202,980 from donors in Wyoming, placing the state in seventh place.

The Federalist recently analyzed Cheney’s campaign finances to date based on public records from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and found that less than 10% of her donors are Wyoming residents. Less than 2 percent of Liz Cheney’s total donations came from her home state, The Federalist further determined. This figure not much lower than the congresswoman’s Wyoming approval rating, which hovers around 10%.

The incumbent, who is seeking a fourth term in November, will have a sizable cash advantage over her primary challenger. Harriet Hageman, who Trump has endorsed, raised about $745,382 with the majority coming from in-state donors.
