11-Year-Old Uvalde Shooting Survivor Nearly Suffers Cardiac Arrest at Friend’s Memorial

An 11-year-old Uvalde shooting survivor nearly suffered a cardiac arrest and has been hospitalized after attending a best friend’s memorial last week.

Illiana Treviño, a fourth-grader at Robb Elementary School, lost her 10-year-old best friend, Amerie Jo Garzain, in last month’s Texas massacre.

18-Year-Old Salvador Ramos murdered at least 19 students and 2 teachers last month in the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

According to a PEOPLE, Iliana’s heart rate spiked after visiting Amerie’s memorial last week. Iliana told her mother, Jessica Trevino, that she was not feeling well, prompting her mother to rush her to the hospital in San Antonio.

The doctors told Illiana that she was on the verge of having a heart attack, PEOPLE reported.

Last Tuesday, Jessica took her daughter downtown to leave a teddy bear and flowers at the memorial for Amerie.

Afterward, Illiana didn’t feel right. Her heart was racing, and she told her mother she’d never felt that way before.

“The hospital told me, ‘Your daughter’s going into cardiac arrest.’ And I said, ‘What?’” Jessica remembers. “Her heart [rate] skyrocketed because she couldn’t take the trauma … all the trauma and pain from it.”

Illiana was transferred to a hospital in San Antonio, where she remains. She has been moved out of the ICU but she hasn’t been discharged yet. Doctors tell Jessica that IIliana is showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress from the trauma she suffered. Her heart is being constantly monitored, her mother says.

“Her body was basically shutting down completely. It couldn’t take it,” Jessica says. “Her body was basically reacting to the shock.”

A GoFundMe page was set up to raise enough funds for Illiana’s medical bill. The fundraising page has raised $40,943 of its stated $20,000 goal.

“Baby Illiana Trevino is one of the many children that survived the tragic incident in Robb elementary. Her Bestfriend Amerie was one of the children that were murdered. Amerie would protect Illiana from bullies and always came to her aid. Illiana is in Children’s Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the moment. Her heart can’t take the stress and trauma of this past week. The medication that she’s been given is not working. The doctor’s biggest worry is that she might go into cardiac arrest. We are barely seeing the ripples side effects of what this tragic incident has brought to our community. I know a lot of us know this family. V Her Parents will have to stay in San Antonio for the moment because Illiana will be kept in hospital until further notice. Please join us in this prayer chain & if u find it in you’re heart to help out economically please do so $jessicatrevino08.”

A new update was posted on the fundraising page on Saturday saying Illiana has been discharged from the hospital and is on her way now to recovery.

“Thank you everyone for the continued support and prayers Illiaña is at home now and on her way to recovery I want to thank everyone for all the prayers,” the organizer of the fundraising page posted.
