Last Updated on July 19, 2022

U.S. Capitol Police arrested a group of 17 House democrats protesting outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The Democrats took part in a planned “civil disobedience” protest, pushing back against the recent SCOTUS ruling which overturned Roe v. Wade.

Video footage posted to Twitter shows a grimacing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez pretending to be handcuffed while she is escorted off by police.

The other politicians arrested include prominent figures in the far-Left movement such as: Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.), Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), Rep. Alma Adams (D-N.C.), Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Rep. The Capitol Police posted to Twitter that they “made a total of 34 arrests for Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding (DC Code § 22–1307).”

Rep. Ilhan Omar defended her act of civil disobedience on Twitter, despite her arrest. “Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!” she tweeted.

The politicians refused to listen to the Capitol Police’s warnings that they will be arrested. The Capitol Police’s Twitter account detailed the chain of events.

“Demonstrators are starting to block First Street, NE. It is against the law to block traffic, so officers are going to give our standard three warnings before they start making arrests.” the Capitol Police tweeted at 1:18 PM EST.

They gave their “standard three warnings” before making the arrests.

Video footage posted to Twitter displays the politicians refusing police orders.
