McConnell, Other Prominent GOP Senators Face Criticism for Soft Response to Mar-A-Lago Raid

Upon the release of the news of the FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s home in Florida, political figures from across the spectrum have chimed in with their two cents. Many figures, even some on the political left, were quick to point out the unprecedented nature of a currently unpopular administration using its law enforcement arm to raid the private residence of a former President. Many echoed the former President’s sentiment that America is descending into third world levels of corruption.

While many Republicans were quick to condemn the acts of the Biden DOJ and FBI, some didn’t seem to grasp the significance of the situation. Particularly significant examples of this came from some Senate Republicans.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) was one of the few who initially pointed out how this particular situation was not just “politics as usual,” but that a line had been crossed.

Conservative activist Christopher Bedford also illustrated in his thread that the disgraced former Democratic Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, was quicker to speak out on the matter than Senate Republicans largely were.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) took to CBS Mornings to speak about the raid, where he urged Americans to let the investigation “play out.”

Critics were quick to point out that letting this investigation “play out” gives a weaponized DOJ and FBI cover to investigate and harass others who openly oppose the regime. After letting Russiagate and other now-debunked “scandals” run their course, many on the right are tired of this refrain.

Many Republicans, particularly those in the Senate, have drawn criticism from Trump’s base on many major issues going back to Trump’s presidency. Since Trump has been out of the White House, virtually no Republican Senators have sought to carry on Trump’s America First policy agenda, and have often shown that they’ll prioritize pet projects that have little to do with supporting the cultural and economic interests of their voter base. Rather, GOP leadership has gone all in funding Ukraine’s war effort, and in many cases have voted along with Democrats to increase the size and power of the federal government.
