Rhode Island School Board Official Equates Misgendering To an Act of ‘Violence’ And ‘Hate Speech’

A Rhode Island school board official has been criticized after making a slew of attacks against anyone proclaiming hate speech by “misgendering” students.

Jennifer Lima, an elected member of the North Kingstown School Committee, made a social media post on Facebook which said “Purposefully misgendering students is an act of violence. Respond accordingly.”

“I recognize that some may find the use of the word violence in this post extreme,” Lima noted before citing the World Health Organization’s definition of violence.

“Any act of violence in our schools which creates an unsafe environment (physically or emotionally by or for any member of the school community) needs to be dealt with accordingly,” she added.

Lima suggested when someone misgenders a student the incident should be investigated and disciplined “in the same way as any other biased-based assault.”

Lima’s Facebook post reposted a previous post made by “Gender Inclusive Schools”,  an LGBTQ advocacy group.

“Honest mistakes will happen any time there is a change to a student’s name and pronoun/s. Prove your values by doing better tomorrow, the next day, the next week. But when a staff members looks directly at a gender expansive member of your school community and deliberately misgenders them, it’s an act of violence. It’s hate speech. It has no place in school communities and should be investigated and disciplined in the same way as any other bias-based assault. It’s not about your privately held beliefs, it’s about your human decency. It’s about the safety of children and every person at school,” the LGBTQ-affirming school group posted.

Lima has a history of spouting far-Left talking points. In 2021, The Gaspee Project, a Rhode Island nonprofit that seeks to defend parental rights and end the radical left’s “Progressive” agenda, called for Lima to be recalled from her school board role because she was “anti-American” and allegedly supportive of a “Marxist” agenda.

“I think that I am being targeted because I am vocal about deeper antiracism education,” Lima said of the recall efforts.

Nicole Solas, a Senior Fellow at the Independent Women’s Forum, issued a call for Lima to “resign for this irresponsible and disgraceful behavior before someone gets hurt.”

“Her public call for students to ‘respond accordingly’ to non-existent violence is her own tacit call to violence against those who oppose her radical ideology,” Solas told Fox News.

“She creates a hostile, paranoid school environment where violence is now more likely to happen thanks to her hysterical message that danger lurks around every pronoun,” Solas added.
