Desperate DeSantis reveals Hail Mary play that would put him one spot closer to securing GOP nomination.
The electorate should reconsider former President Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee if he’s found guilty in his sham kangaroo court trials, according to GOP opponent Ron DeSantis.
The Florida governor argued for sidelining Trump during an MSNBC interview, where he noted he signed a GOP loyalty pledge to support the Republican nominee, but expressed doubts about backing a theoretical Trump campaign from prison, which he believes would be unsuccessful.
“Do you really believe that a man who’s convicted of, say, attempting to overturn the 2020 election or taking nuclear secrets back to his beach club, do you actually still, as we sit here today, believe that person should be president?” MSNBC’s Willie Geist asked DeSantis.
The Florida governor responded that he’ll abide by the loyalty pledge he signed, but that ultimately he hopes voters and the GOP realize a Trump candidacy after a potential conviction would be a doomed presidential ticket.
“So I signed a pledge, Willie, and that pledge is what it is,” DeSantis explained.
“Now, do I think somebody under those circumstances could get elected president? The answer is no. That will not happen,” he added.
“I think that Republican voters will understand that as we get closer to voting. But it is, it would be fatal in a general election. I don’t think the party should nominate in that situation. However, I signed the pledge. I’m a Republican. I don’t think it’s going to come to that.”
DeSantis was later criticized on social media for appearing to support the Deep State’s efforts to bench his rival.
“Ron DeSantis’s only path is the DOJ or the RNC helping him out, disgusting,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.
“And that’s why he won’t drop out,” summarized Human Events editor Jack Posobiec, predicting a plan to deny Trump the nomination at the last minute.
“This has been the plan from the start. Are you paying attention yet?” Posobiec added.
The same sentiment has been previously echoed by other Trump supporters who’ve read the writing on the wall.
DeSantis’ disturbing remarks come as former Republican Florida Governor Rick Scott threw his support behind Trump on Thursday, dealing a major blow to the current Republican governor’s campaign.
DeSantis’ comments also follow a warning from Trump Wednesday exposing the far-left’s attempts to remove him from Colorado’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.
