UK: Boris Johnson Hints at Amnesty for Illegal Migrants

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has hinted that he would be open to amnesty for illegal migrants in a press conference earlier this month.

Johnson, the current Conservative Prime Minister, said that he would be happy to grant illegal migrants an amnesty if they haven’t broken the law. “I think when people have been here for a very long time, and haven’t fallen foul of the law, then it makes sense to try to regularise their status,” Johnson said, claiming that that is “pretty much what really happens under the existing rules.”

Migration Watch UK, the country’s biggest watch dog on illegal migration, highlighted that the proposal from Johnson made no sense, as any illegal migrants who are in the country “outside of the law, have by definition, broken it.”

It comes as the government announced a swathe of new policies regarding migration, designed to tackle the massive numbers of illegal migrants who are currently crossing the English Channel into Britain ever day. These include suggestions to move the migrants onto off-shore facilities while their claims are being processed, with potential destinations including the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, or even Turkey.

“The objective is a humanitarian one, or the humane one, which is to stop the abuse by a bunch of traffickers and gangsters, that’s what we’re trying to do,” Johnson said, claiming that the objective in stopping the migrant crossings is “to save lives, and avert human misery because people are crossing the Channel, who are being fooled, who are being conned by gangsters into paying huge sums of money and risking their lives.”

National File’s upcoming documentary, “Destination Dover: Migrants in the Channel,” filmed late last year, is set to throw a light on the severe nature of the illegal crossings, including the impact of the vast flow of migrants into Britain and its consequences on the native population, a topic that Johnson ignored during his press conference on the subject.
