A protest against legal corruption impacting families will take place on May 11 in Sacramento, CA, in front of the California State Capitol Building, West steps. The protest is sponsored by Families Resist, which focuses on the devastating impact of Child Protective Services on families and children. Families Resist is partnering with other organizations and the protest will also include advocates concerned about the abuse of the elderly and disabled through court authorized guardianships.
According to retired Illinois attorney Ken Ditkowsky, “Before I retired I practiced law for over 1/2 a century and never even imagined the type of total disregard for human rights and the Constitution of the United States that has been exhibited in these Guardianship cases.”
He goes on to declare that “It is no longer safe to grow old in America.”
Apparently, it isn’t safe to grow up here, either.
Families Resist asserts that “the system lacks accountability, transparency, and oversight. Families are all too often unnecessarily destroyed and children are frequently placed in foster and group homes where conditions are worse than in the homes they were removed from. It is incredibly traumatizing to remove a child from everything they have ever known or loved.”
Children are not the only ones being damaged by an unaccountable system.
According to a 2020 article in the Oakland Post,
“In the probate court system, it shouldn’t take two years to decide which relative should be awarded conservatorship over an elder. But considering an elder, once assigned to the Alameda County Public Guardian, seldom if ever returns to their family or home, time is a non-issue.”
The protest is planned for 1 pm. 10 am to noon are slotted for legislative visits. According to one of the organizers, Cathy Rodriguez, “We are going to go in to see the legislators to bring awareness to the fact that children are being trafficked through CPS as well as to bring awareness about conservatorship abuse.”
The rally will include speakers, including Assemblyman Isaac Bryan, Cathy Rodriguez, Venus Gist and Michelle Chan of Families Resist. There will be an open mic available from noon to 1 p.m. for non-scheduled speakers who wish to share their stories.
According to Families Resist, “The time is now to come together and RESIST together, and to demand real and lasting change. Children deserve better and families belong together.”
