POLL: Trump Holds Massive Lead in GOP Primary Field

Last Updated on February 21, 2023

Former President Trump has a considerable lead over the 2024 GOP Primary Field, according to a recent Harvard Caps/Harris poll conducted from February 15-16th. Al told, Trump Trump currently holds a 20-point lead over DeSantis in an eight-way race for the 2024 GOP nomination, the poll found.

All told, the pollsters had the former president, Donald Trump, polling at 46%. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis found himself in a distant second place with 23%, while Mike Pence (7%), Nikki Haley (6%), Mike Pompeo (3%), and Marco Rubio (2%) round out the field.  Additionally, Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Tim Scott (R-SC) were each polling at 1%.

In a head-to-head matchup with Governor DeSantis, former President Trump also held a sizable lead of five percentage points. The former president also polled favorably in a number of potential 2024 general election matchups, including a 5-point lead over Biden.

Trump also has a 10-point lead over Kamala Harris if he faces her in 2024.

Interestingly President Trump fares much better against Joe Biden and Kamala Harris than Ron DeSantis. In a potential 2024 General Election match, DeSantis leads Biden by 1 point and Harris by 2 points.

President Trump has enjoyed generally favorable polling in early 2023. A Missouri GOP Primary poll released last week showed Trump leading the field by similar margins to the Harvard/CAPS Harris poll.

To date, President Trump and Nikki Haley are the only candidates who have officially stated that they are running for president. However, despite President Trump’s commanding lead in the Republican Primary polls, more Republicans are expected to join the race in the coming months.
