Report: House Republicans Balk at Real Action on Big Tech

Last Updated on March 17, 2023

Reports from The Hill and CNBC say Republican leadership in the house does not appear to have the appetite to pass anti-trust legislation that would rein in big tech. Mike Davis, founder and president of the Article Three Project, recently lent credence to this rumor on Steve Bannon’s War Room Show. Breaking up big tech was an issue that many House Republicans ran on in the previous cycle.

On Wednesday’s episode of War Room, Steve Bannon asked Mike Davis, “There is a leak that Republicans are not really going to go after big tech at the highest levels. Is there any truth to that rumor? Please tell me it’s not true.”

Davis responded that the rumor is true. “This is confirming what I have been saying for three years, which is Jim Jordan has no intention of holding big tech accountable and he belives that the way you can hold big tech accountable is by updating and enforcing our century-old anti trust laws,” Davis told Bannon.

In the Trenches, host Teddy Daniels committed on Bannon’s and Davis’s exchange by tweeting, “.@Jim_Jordan- is this true?”

Congressman Ken Buck (R-CO), the sponsor of a bill that breaks up big tech and has Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) signed on as cosponsors, told MSNBC this week, “I don’t think Speaker McCarthy, Chairman Jordan or Chairman Massie are advocates for the antitrust, pro-competition solution to the Big Tech problem.”

In response to the building pressure against him for refusing to act on big tech, Congressman Jim Jordan discussed the rumor with MSNBC. “The GOP also doesn’t want to give the Biden administration more power and resources,: Jordan said.

A divide has been growing between the GOP grassroots voters and GOP House Leadership. Earlier this month, Speaker McCarthy promised to release all the January 6th footage to the public. However, National File reported that McCarthy is dragging his feet on releasing the J6 footage.

Paul Gosar (R- AZ) recently told Stew Peters that he will push for the release of the J6 tapes “I certainly hope that’s coming. We have our annual retreat, Stew, coming up beginning of next week, and this will be one of the issues that we ask for. And we’re going to push for” Gosar said.
