The main playable protagonist of newly announced video game Far Cry 6 will be an Antifa activist, the game’s narrative director has announced.
The video game, which is to release in 2021, is set in the fictional Caribbean nation of Yara. Yara is ruled by a “fascist” dictator, who states that “Yara was a prosperous paradise, and under my rule it will be once again”, a clear reference to President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Narrative director Navid Khavari stated the game will focus on the theme of revolution, and will contain references to the 1959 Cuban revolution, where a pro-American ruler was ousted by anti-American communists.
Gamespot elaborated on the game’s narrative:
The new game coming from Ubisoft Toronto leans more heavily into the dynamic of revolution, and how Yara’s citizens rise up to free themselves instead of waiting for an outside savior to do it for them. Far Cry 6’s story is about combating fascism, and you are playing as a member of the anti-fascist movement.
“When we landed on the inspiration of the island of Cuba, and got to spend about a month there for initial research, we got really excited about this idea of a modern guerilla revolution,” Khavari told Gamespot.

Khavari went on to note that this inspired him to use his video game to explore the boundaries of when “systemic oppression” leads to armed Antifa insurrection.
“When you’re looking at any revolution, you’re examining the nature of defiance, systemic oppression, and the idea of how far do you have to be pushed to be willing to pick up a gun–to be willing to risk your life for something you believe in?”

He was eager to draw parallels between ongoing Antifa insurrectionary activity in the West and the narrative of his video game.
“To be very honest, I think it’s actually been quite powerful to watch these themes gain more prominence in the last few months around the world, particularly in the United States, Canada, London,” he added. “For us, what I’m proud of is when we were looking at building the revolution in Yara, we didn’t try to shy away from difficult subjects and really to draw meaning from that. So I’m hoping players will be able to see that meeting and have those themes resonate with them. I think that’s exciting for us to be able to present in the game.”
Far Cry 6 is not the only upcoming Ubisoft video game to lionize far-left Antifa activists. Watch Dogs: Legion will put the player in the role of an Antifa activist in a fascist post-Brexit Britain, where immigrants from the EU face persecution.
