Minneapolis, Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on Friday, less than two months after being convicted of both second and third degree murder in the Floyd case in April.
“I am not basing my sentence on public opinion,” Judge Peter Cahill stated.
Chauvin will have to “register as a predatory offender,” is barred from owning or possessing firearms for the remainder of his life, and received an additional ten years on the sentence due to the “cruelty” he showed to Floyd according to Judge Cahill. Chauvin is 45 years old, and if released after serving the full sentence, would be over 67 years old when he leaves prison.
“I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd family,” Chauvin said during sentencing. “There’s gonna be some other information in the future that would be of interest, and I hope things will give you some peace of mind. Thank you.”
Floyd’s death set off a series of violent criminal riots during the summer of 2020. Floyd attorney Benjamin Crump tweeted, “22.5 YEARS! This historic sentence brings the Floyd family and our nation one step closer to healing by delivering closure and accountability.”
