In the latest hilarious development with NPR complaining about Twitter pointing out that it is government funded, a reporter there has revealed that Elon Musk has sent a series of emails warning the outlet that if they stay inactive on the platform, the handle @NPR will be reassigned to “another company”.
NPR has not tweeted since it was assigned the labels ‘state-affiliated’, which was then changed to ‘government funded’ and finally ‘publicly funded’, before the labelling system was dropped altogether for all accounts, including the NPR, CBC and BBC, as well as the likes of RT and Chinese state media accounts.
It seemed like Musk had made his point and the saga was over. But apparently not.
On Tuesday, NPR reporter Bobby Allyn claimed that he received emails from Musk informing him that the outlet’s Twitter handle could be reassigned if NPR doesn’t pick up tweeting again.
Allyn claims that “In an unprompted Tuesday email, Musk wrote: ‘So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?’”
The reporter also claims that Musk told him “Our policy is to recycle handles that are definitively dormant,” adding “Same policy applies to all accounts. No special treatment for NPR.”
When Allyn responded and asked Musk who he would assign the @NPR handle to, the Twitter CEO reportedly responded “National Pumpkin Radio” and added fire and laughing emojis.
Musk apparently also asked Allyn “NPR isn’t tagged as government-funded anymore, so what’s the beef?”
Allyn’s revelation (ironically via a tweet) of Musk epically trolling him led to the inevitable:
