An Obama-appointed judge sentenced Trump adviser Peter Navarro to four months in prison on Thursday, for defying an unconstitutional subpoena from the J6 witch hunt committee, which Navarro describes as a “kangaroo court.”
Obama-appointed federal judge Amit Mehta sentenced Navarro on Thursday and also slapped him with a $9,500 fine after he was convicted back in September of contempt of Congress for his refusal to comply with the J6 Committee, with Navarro and others asserting executive privilege alongside President Trump. The sentence is two months short of the six months Biden’s DOJ sought for Navarro.
Remarkably, Obama judge Mehta barred Navarro from arguing the validity of his executive privilege claim at trial.
“When I received that congressional subpoena, the second, I had an honest belief that the privilege had been invoked, and I was torn. Nobody in my position should be put in conflict between the legislative branch and the executive branch,” Navarro reportedly said as he spoke in his own defense in court.
“Is that the lesson of this entire proceeding? Get a letter and a lawyer? I think in a way it is,” said Navarro, adding that he was “unable to provide a defense, one of the most important elements of our justice system.”
After his sentencing, Navarro addressed the media but was repeatedly interrupted by a pro-judicial weaponization demonstrator with a whistle and a cowbell.
Navarro told the press that the case is “destined for the Supreme Court,” which will have to determine if a senior aide to the President can be forced to testify by Congress.
“Unfortunately the opposition behind us won’t let this be heard, but we’re going to do our best here,” Navarro went on.
